Been Busy

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Finals are coming up so that means there are a lot of papers to turn in. Why do they do that, I don't know. I think it would be better if we turned them in earlier so that we have more time to study for finals, but who knows. Well at least not all of my professors are doing it that way, but most are. I like to get the papers back before finals so that I know what my grade is going into the final. Do I need to spend more time studying or can I concentrate my efforts in another class.
In other news I just wanted to say, Please don't let your kids use the internet unsupervised. And don't let them have a web camera. You don't know where those images could go.

Rape

So in class today we went over rape. We have preconceived notions about what rape is. These are some actual definitions of rape:

  • any unlawful act of sexual intercourse with a person against that person's will by force, fear or trick
  • forced sexual intercourse where the victim may be either male or female and the offender may be of the same sex or a different sex from the victim.
  • Sexual assault includes a wide range of victimizations involving attacks in which unwanted sexual contact occurs between the victim and the offender.
  • Any sexual penetration, however slight, is sufficient to complete the crime.

Right now most states do not include the use of an object in the definition of rape, but many states are trying to change that.

80% of victims know their rapist. They are a loved one, friend, or family member

Rape is notalwaysy sexual, it is just a subgroup of physical violence.

Here are some facts.
In 1997 the umber of Rapes and sexual assaults was 485,290
Single offenderscommittedd 91.1% of the crimes
--Involving--
-----Strangers 17.6%
-----Non-strangers 73.5% (this is a person you know)

Multiple offenders committed the other 8.9%
--Involving--
-----Strangers 6.8%
-----Non-strangers 2.1%

Most rapes happen between 6pm and 6am. And they happen close to the victims home or anacquaintance'ss home.

Overlap with Child Abuse
Most victims under 18

  • 44% of rape victims were under the age of 18
  • The self-reports of convicted rape and sexual assault offenders serving time in State prisons indicate that two-thirds of such offenders had victims under the age of 18
  • 58% of those--or nearly 4 in 10 imprisoned violent sex offenders--said their victims were age 12 or younger
  • 90% of the rapes of children younger than 12, the child knew the offender

Domestic Violence

I am working on a paper about domestic violence: causes from the feminist and psychological views. It is hard to research the causes for the psychological view of domestic violence. The articles keep coming up with the psychological effects it has on women. I have finally come up with a few articles. When I am done with the paper I will write the abstracts of the articles for you to read. The feminist view sees males as dominant and they need the control over women. (I am keeping it short for now I will give you exact definitions later). Psychological causes are mental health disorders with the abusers.
I am trying to figure out what side I am on. It is hard to choose a side as both sides have some valid information about why they abuse. I have to go find some books in the library soon. I hope that they will help with my paper. I only need four sources but more are always useful.
I need to work on my culminating event for my fake project in my fake school for the fake class. I will post my finished project after I get my grade on the poster text which is due next week.

Bi-lingual Education

A long and hard debate.
Should schools have a bi-lingual education program? How will it be funded? What kind of Bi-lingual education program should we implement? And many more questions were brought up during the class debate on Thursday. There are three main types of Bi-lingual education programs, one including a dual language class, where native and non-native students learn English and a second language together.
Many reasons people think bi-lingual education programs are bad is because the students do poorly on standardized tests. Well that is mostly from them not learning the rote material that is on the test. Many studies have found that non-native English speakers will learn better if they can read in their native language. They can use the knowledge they gain from reading and transfer that information into making it easier to read in English.
Another thing people believe is that ESL students fall behind when they learn two languages. Well, they might not have the same exact level as native English speakers, but they have knowledge in two languages. They can think and speak in two languages, although not at the same level. Bi-lingual education has positive cognitive effects on a person.
